Nice coin, JoeyD! -- If you look closely and decipher the inscriptions, a few items stand out. Thanks to the trusty Krause Mischler catalog (a massive work and the definitive catalog of World Coins), we can learn such facts that Maria Theresa ruled Austria from 1740 to 1780 and the MAR:TH D G R on the side with her picture means Maria Theresa Queen by the Grace of God. Then, on the other side, the AUS is a give-away for Austria. KM gives further details about this coin being from the old Netherelands, approximately where Belgium is today.
So you have an old Ducaton from the Netherlands when it was part of Austria. Here are some typical values:
1/8 and 1/4 Ducaton (about 28 mm diameter)
worn: $15 US dollars catalog value
average circulated (like the picture): $25
well presevered: $120
1/2 Ducaton (about 34 mm diameter)
worn: $15 US dollars catalog value
average circulated (like the picture): $35
well presevered: $150
Ducaton (about 40 mm diameter)
worn: $50 US dollars catalog value
average circulated (like the picture): $120
well presevered: $400
To convert these catalog values to actual values, please go to our Terminology page. For instance, if you have a ducaton in average circulated condition and wanted to sell it to a coin dealer, figure the dealer would buy it for about one-half of catalog value, or $50 to $70.
Thanks to JoeyD for letting us use the picture of his coin.
