The 'von Bayern' is a give-away for the old German State of Bavaria. This zwei (2) thaler is big, bold, and beautiful and commemorates the monetary union of six southern States under King Ludwig I. You can see the shields of the six States surrounding the figure of justice and plenty.
CoinQuest thanks Westfälische Auktions Gesellschaft in Arnsberg for use of their coin image. WAG has the pictured coin for sale for 300 euros, about $380 US dollars, and that is a good price for such a great coin in wonderful condition. If WAG were to buy this coin from the general public, they would pay about one-half of this retail value, 150 euros, for this coin. Such 100 percent markup is common in the rare coin business and is necessary to keep dealerships afloat.
If the coin were in worse shape, with lots of wear and perhaps a spot or two, the value would go down substantially, perhaps to $50 to $100.
