From the old German State of Wurttemberg, these nice old gold coins carry value commensurate with their gold content plus additional value derived from demand of coin collectors.
To get an approximate estimate of catalog value, start with the basic gold value. Here are the necessary data:
5 MARK: 17 mm diameter, 0.068 troy ounces of gold
10 MARK: 19 mm diameter, 0.115 troy ounces of gold
20 MARK: 22 mm diameter, 0.230 troy ounces of gold
If you use a web site like kitco.com, you will find the gold is priced today at $1350 US dollars per troy ounce (at this writing). So, for instance, the base value of a 10 mark coin is 0.115 x 1350 = $155. A 20 mark coin computes to $310.
The price of gold changes every hour. Look it up now to find the base value of your coin.
Now if your coin is in good shape numismatically (i.e., from a coin collector point of view), and does not have problems like scratches, holes, dents, or cleanings, you can add additional value approximately as follows:
5 MARK:
damaged or cleaned: add $0
circulated: add $200
fully uncirculated: add $550
5 mark dated 1878F are rare, add $650 if circulated and $1800 if uncirculated
10 MARK:
damaged or cleaned: add $0
circulated: add $50
fully uncirculated: add $250
20 MARK:
damaged or cleaned: add $0
circulated: add $35
fully uncirculated: add $200
This will give an approximate catalog value. Use our Terminology page to convert these catalog values to actual buy and sell values.
