Mexico 1/8 and 1/4 Real 1833 to 1856

Mexico 1/8 and 1/4 Real 1833 to 1856

Hello Li -- The catalogs list your piece as a 1/4 real from the Republic of Mexico. There was also a 1/8 real with the same pattern, only smaller. Here are the diameters of these old-and-interesting pieces:

1/8 REAL: 19 mm diameter
1/4 REAL: 25 mm diameter

The 1/8 reals are extremely rare. My catalog won't even venture a guess at value. When that happens it means the coins are worth *a lot*! For the 1/4 real pieces here is what the catalog says:

1/4 REAL:
heavily worn: $10
worn: $35
average circulated (like Li's picture shown here): $100
well preserved: very rare
coins dated 1833: multiply these values by 1.5

The legend says ESTADO SOBERANO DE CHIHUAHUA (the sovereign state of Chihuahua) on coins before 1840, ESTADO LIBRE DE CHIHUAHUA (free state) on coins dated 1846, and just ESTADO DE CHIHUAHUA or, like Li's coin, DEPARTAMENTO DE CHIHUAHA (administrative district) on coins dated after 1850. Chihuahua, for which the small dog is named, is a state in northern Mexico.
