If you follow a map north and a little west from Australia you find a collection of large and small islands and peninsulas called Malaysia. One of the larger islands is called Borneo, and North Borneo is a northern state there.
Great Britain issued coinage for North Borneo in various denominations, including 1, 2 1/2, 5, and 25 cents which all bear the two-men-and-a-shield pattern. Some of the earlier cents were minted in bronze, so their color is different than the copper-nickel issues. The 25 cent coin was issued in 50 percent silver. Some coins bear the inscription 'British North Borneo' and others 'State of North Borneo.' This appraisal page applies to all these variations.
