Kathy's coin comes from the old German State of Saxony after the states congealed into the German Empire in 1871. The 10 mark coin contains 0.1152 troy ounces of gold. The 20 mark coin looks the same, but it is bigger and contains 0.2304 ounces of gold. If gold is trading at, say, $1300 US dollars per troy ounce, the current base value (BV) of the gold in the 10 mark coin is 0.1152 x $1300 = $150, and double that for the 20 mark. Use a web site such as kitco.com to find the current price of gold. It changes every day.
Added value, over and above the basic gold value computed above, is due to collector appeal, and is proportional to the condition of the specific coin. You don't see very much Saxony gold from King George (1902 to 1904). Instead, King Albert (1873 to 1902) is more common on these coins. As such, collectors will pay a little more for George coins over Albert, and we reflect that fact in the listings below. CoinQuest estimates of collector value over basic gold value are:
10 MARK
worn: BV
average circulated: BV + $20 US dollars
well preserved: BV + $50
fully uncirculated: BV + $200
20 MARK
worn: BV
average circulated: BV + $20 US dollars
well preserved: BV + $100
fully uncirculated: BV + $300
These are approximate catalog prices and assume the coin has good eye appeal and no damage, such as spots, stains, cleanings, nicks, gouges, or cuts. If you were selling your coin to a dealer, he or she might pay about 50 percent less than catalog to maintain dealer markup.
