Yo, Sarah --
South Africa issued these nice coins in silver from 1923 to 1960. The woman and anchor pattern shows on all these coins, but the monarch on the front changes from George V to George VI and finally Elizabeth II. As you can see from our second picture, the reverse side of the more modern coins is slightly different.
The silver content also changed over the years, as follows:
1923 to 1950: 0.146 troy ounces silver
1951 to 1960: 0.091 troy ounces silver
Like many silver coins today, these are enjoying strong value. Our listing below calls out approximate catalog value for South Africa 1 shilling coins. You must use our Important Terminology page to understand what these values mean and how to convert them to actual buy and sell values.
