I like toned coins. If I were looking for a South Africa 3 pence for my collection, I would pay more for the specimen in the picture because is has spiffy rainbow toning. Over the years this silver coin has picked up impurities from the atmosphere and those impurities have reacted with the surface to create coloring effects. However, I am in the minority. Most collectors like their silver coins blast white, or completely untoned. Dem guys don't know what dey's missin'.
The above, of course, is a digression. As to the value of South African 3 pence, the catalogs list them with relatively small values. They contain 0.036 troy ounces of silver. Here is a rough idea:
BEFORE 1937 (with King George V):
worn: $2 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $5
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $75
coins dated 1925 are worth about three times these values
coins dated 1931 are truly rare and catalog over $2000 in average circulated condition
AFTER 1936 (with George VI and Elizabeth II)
circulated: $1 US dollar
uncirculated: $8
