The nice looking coin in our picture is fully uncirculated. You can see the nice luster that the coin displays. Luster is a creaminess or frostiness that appears on an uncirculated coin. Coins that are shiney, and not lustrous, are usually circulated or (worse) cleaned.
These silver coins have King William (Gulielmus) IV until 1838 when they change to Queen Victoria. They have seated Britannia on the back. Britannia is the UK's symbol of integrity. Four pence is called a groat. Each groat contains 0.056 troy ounces of silver.
Catalog values for common dates in this series show the strong trend with condition:
worn: $10 us dollard approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $150
There are some better dates in this series as follows. The values after the dates are for average circulated coins.
1851: $120 average circulated, much more fully uncirculated
1852: $200
1853: $400
Be careful that these are 'catalog' values. This can be misleading. To clear up what 'catalog' means, look at our Terminology page.
