You are correct both times, Rajeev. Your coin is from East Germany and it is made out of aluminum. The old East Germany was called Deutsche Demokratische Republik while the old West Germany was called Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Tranlated, these mean 'Democratic Republic' and 'Federal Republic' respectively.
Like all modern coins, these are worth face value. If you have a nice specimen with little wear, no problems, and good eye appeal, a collector will pay a few US dollars to add it to his or her collection. For later dates, the 'Deutsche' is dropped from 'Deutsche Mark' on the side with the numeral. (Deutsch means German.) Collectors, then, would want to have both types in their collections: one with 'Deutsche' and one without it.
