Mexico Puebla 1862 to 1962

Medal Mexico Puebla 1862 to 1962

'Heroica Batalla de Puebla' means 'Herioc Battle of Puebla' and this inscription appears on several different Mexican medals issued at the 100th anniversary of this great battle.

For a medal with the same inscription but different pattern, go to this CoinQuest page [Press Here].

The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5, 1862 near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico. The battle ended in a victory for the Mexican Army against the occupying French forces. The victory is celebrated today during the festivities of Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May.

These medals come in a few different metals. There are official versions in gold and silver, and knock-offs in brass and possibly other non-precious metals. For gold and silver medals the base value (BV) is computed by multiplying the gold or silver content by the current price of the precious metal. For instance, if gold is selling for $1000 US dollars per troy ounce, the BV of a gold pueblo is 0.500 x 1000 = $500.

BRASS OR OTHER BASE METAL
circulated, bad eye-appeal: $5 US dollars approximate catalog value
uncirculated, great eye-appeal: $30

SILVER (21.8 grams, 0.900 fine, 0.631 troy oz)
circulated: BV + $5
uncirculated, great eye-appeal: BV + $20

GOLD (27 mm, 17.3 grams, 0.900 fine, 0.50 troy oz)
circulated: BV + $100
uncirculated, great eye-appeal: BV + $250

GOLD (38 mm, 41.7 grams, 0.900 fine, 1.21 troy oz)
circulated: BV + $100
uncirculated, great eye-appeal: BV + $400

Damaged or severely worn medals are worth the value of the precious metal they contain. To find this value, use a website such as Kitco.com to look up the current value of gold or silver, and then multiply it by the number of troy ounces the medal contains.

Remember, if you have such a medal and want to sell it to a dealer, he or she usually pays about one half of retail price. Check out our Important Terminology found at the top left in order to properly interpret these catalog values.
