'Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit' (unity and justice and freedom) were hardly in the offing for 1923 Germany. Difficult economic times was one of the tools Hitler and others used to turn national sentiment away from democracy and toward the Nazi flavor of socialism. The fact that Germany issued 200 and 500 mark coins in aluminum is a strong indication of runaway inflation. By 1933 the monetary system had been re-vamped and the Nazis were issuing 1 reichsmark coins in nickel, a step up over aluminum in metallic composition.
Collector value of these old 200 and 500 mark coins is low. Except for one noted exception, the values for both denominations run like this:
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $6
fully uncirculated: $12
You must apply our Terminology criteria to change these catalog values into actual buy and sell values.
The exceptional date and mint mark is 1923J for the 500 mark coin (not the 200 mark coin). If you have a 23J 500 mark, multiply the values above by 10.
