Medal US Treasury Award (Minuteman) 1941 to 1945

Numismatics is the fancy name for coin collecting, but what Terry has is not a coin, it is a medal issued by the US Treasury. A growing subculture of numismatics is called exonumia and it specializes in the collecting of interesting coin-like objects such as tokens and medals. Do an Internet search on 'exonumia' and you will find all sorts of cool stuff!

What we have here, then, is an interesting piece of exonumia. Nice looking, isn't it? Assembling an organized collection of such pieces would be a worthwhile endeavor.

As best I can tell, these medals were issued by the US Mint for patriotic service during the years of WW II. They were, no doubt, issued to people in the States for selling War Bonds. The one in our picture was awarded to Mr. or Ms. Russell.

If you look on eBay you can find these selling at auction in the $20 to $30 US dollar range. That is a good estimate of retail price. Were you to sell such an item to a dealer, figure he or she would want a 100 percent markup, so the offer to buy would be $10 to $15.
