This coin is from Straits Settlements, which was under British rule in 1845. Now it is known as West Malaysia, with its major city Singapore, on the Malay Peninsula of Asia. The British East India Company issued coinage for this region until 1900.
The coin in our picture has a stain at the 9:00 position. This will lower its value substantially, since coin collectors are always looking for the best possible eye appeal. No one wants a collection of ugly coins!
But, to obtain good looks, collectors pay handsomely. That's what drives the catalog prices up on these coins as condition improves.
NEVER CLEAN A COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.
