Frederick (Friedrich) was dying of cancer and ruled as King Friedrich III of Prussia only from March to June 1888. The state issued several coins in his honor, with two silver coins the 2 mark and 5 mark. Other 1888 2 and 5 mark coins bear the portrait of King Wilhelm II.
