Wow. What a great coin! The image that Milen sent us comes from CoinArchives.com (a terrific web site) from an auction run by Baldwin's, a highly respected numismatic (coin collecting) house in London. CoinQuest thanks Baldwin's for use of their coin image.
These old Russian roubles are quite valuable, but what makes Baldwin's coin remarkable is its superb condition. It is essentially uncirculated, kept in a collection from the time it left the Russian mint. Milen's coin has a hole in it. This damage renders Milen's coin essentially valueless.
The catalogs call out values as follows. All dates run approximately the same, with a few exceptions noted below.
worn: $40 US dollars approximate catalog values
average circulated: $70
well preserved: $200
fully uncirculated (like the photo): $500
coins dated before 1832 are more rare; multiply these values by two
coins dated 1839 are extremely rare; one specimen in well preserved condition sold for $17,250 in May 2006. It would be worth even more today.
Remember that these are catalog values. Actual values will be lower, as explained on our Terminology page.
