That's a great old coin from Spain, Paige. Look at the picture of this wonderful example from Civitas Galleries in Middleton, WI. The Civitas coin is in such good condition, without much wear and no scratches, stains, cleanings, marks, and the like, it is on sale for a little more than $300 US dollars. This is a good price for such a nice piece.
Coins with this 'crowed coat of arms' pattern were minted by several Spanish kings of the period, including:
- Philip V (Phs) 1700 to 1746
- Luis I (Ludouicus) 1724
- Fernando VI (Ferd, Ferdnd, Frdnd, Frd) 1746 to 1759
- Charles III (Carlos, Carolus, Carolvs, Carol, Car) 1759 to 1788
You can see their names on the side with the crowned arms.
As to value, we can give only approximate ideas for the various coins. You should consult a knowledgeable collector or coin dealers for closer estimates, because the subject of old Spanish coins is complicated, and there are many nuances and subtleties involved. Spanish coins were minted in Spain but also in many countries in the New World, and all of them carry an elaborate system of mint marks and assayer's initials. Details like this are beyond CoinQuest's ken. You need a real coin catalog.
Here are some very approximate catalog values. You must apply the concepts on our Terminology page to convert these catalog values to actual buy and sell values. In general the older coins of Philip and Fernando are worth more than the newer coins of Charles III.
