The gold doubloons of Ephraim Brasher, EB, a neighbor of George Washington, are certainly interesting and famous pieces of Americana. The first legal tender US coins were issued in America in 1792, a full 16 years after the Declaration of Independence. Until then, mostly Spanish coins supported commerce. Goldsmith Brasher issued his coins during the 16 years between 1776 and 1792.
The few genuine specimens known to exist are worth tens (or hundreds) of thousands of US dollars. Virtually every specimen you see today is a replica. If you have a gold replica, it is worth several thousand dollars. Most replicas are not gold. We provide a side-by-side picture below to help you compare your coin to known genuine and fake examples.
