Cuba issued a large silver one peso coin in 1898. They are quite valuable. The one shown here is from the World Money Shop in Pennsylvania, where it is on sale for about $2000 US dollars. This is a good price for several reasons. First, the condition of the coin is superb. Second, the coin is authenticated, graded, and encapsulated by NGC, a leading numismatic (coin collecting) service company. The NGC 'slab' guarantees that the coin is genuine, not a counterfeit, and that it is almost completely uncirculated, with a numismatic grade of AU55 -- a very respectable grade for such a rare coin.
Here is what the catalogs say for this coin.
1898 CUBA PESO:
worn: $600 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1000
well preserved: $2000
fully uncirculated: $4000
The concepts on our Terminology page apply to these values.
The prior year, in 1897, private concerns issued an unofficial souvenir coin with a very similar pattern to raise money. These coins are sought by collectors as well, but the prices are slightly lower -- about three-quarters of the values shown for the 1898 peso above. You can read about the 1897 and 1898 pesos at this web page by the Cuban Numismatic Association.
CoinQuest thanks the World Money Shop for use of their coin photo. It is a nice one!
