US New Jersey Copper 1786 to 1788

US New Jersey Copper 1786 to 1788

'Nova Caesarea' means 'New Jersey' and these old coins from Americ's colonial period are often worth lots of money if they are in good condition. Most you see are worn to a frazzle, and of those many have severe damage such as pitting, corrosion, holes, scrapes, and gouges.

DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.

The coin in our picture comes from repsected eBay seller njnumis in (where else?) New Jersey, USA. It is in decent condition and would normally sell retail for about $300 to $400 US dollars. Heavily worn coins catalog around $50, and well preserved specimens can easily exceed the $2000 mark.

There are also several different varieties that change the value substantially. For instance, a variety with the horse's head facing left is worth about twice the right-facing variety. Detailed varieties are beyond CoinQuest's ken. Be sure to contact a knowledgable collector or a reputable dealer about your specific variety. If you want to send CoinQuest a picture, we can usually give a refined estimate as long as the picture is large and in focus. Use our Contact Us link to start an e-mail exchange with CoinQuest.

You must always be wary of counterfeits with valuable coins. If you find something too good to be true, it is! The defense against counterfeits is to buy coins that have been authenticated, graded, and encapsulated by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG (look them up on the Internet; do not use other servcies) and always buy from a trustworthy, reputable coin dealer.

CoinQuest thanks njnumis for use of their coin photo. It is a nice one.
