Mitch sent us this picture of his Iraqi coin. It is a 100 fils piece minted in 50% pure silver.
Mitch says he sees the date 1909 on the coin, and that is exactly what it looks like to Western eyes. But the numerals are Eastern Arabic, as shown in this table. The date, then, is actually 1959, not 1909. The second date, 1379, is a Hejira date based on the lunar calendar and starting at the time Mohammed was alive (around 600 AD).
Since Mitch has a modern coin and it is not in uncirculated condition, the value will be equal to the value of its silver content. There are 0.161 troy ounces of silver in Mitch's coin. Using kitco.com to find the current price of silver, which is $40.35 US dollars per troy ounce, the value is 0.161 x 40.35 = $6.50. When the price of silver goes up or down, the value of this coin does, too. Collectors would probably be willing to pay a few dollars over silver value for coins that are in fully uncirculated condition.
