This tiny gold coin from Portugal is a cutie. It has larger, more prestigious cousins, shown at this CoinQuest link, but the cousins do not have the nice feathers in the pattern of the 400 reis. Here are the stats:
PORTUGAL 400 REIS: 14 mm diameter, 0.032 troy ounces gold
The catalogs are a little light-handed with this coin. The coin in our picture comes from respected coin dealer Kapaan and Mades in Bochum, Germany, where it is on sale for about $550 US dollars. Looking the coin up in a standard reference catalog says it should be worth about $150. Who is right, K&M or the catalog? In this case, the catalog is low, which is unusual. Most of the time catalog prices are much higher than actual buy and sell prices.
The list below gives CoinQuest's educated opinion about catalog values for this coin. Use our Important Terminology page to convert catalog values to actual buy and sell values.
worn: $100
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $300
fully uncirculated: $550
These values apply to most of the dates in the series. There are some *better dates* which are worth about twice these values, as follows:
1768
1772
1775
1776
