Canada (Upper) Penny and Half Penny Tokens 1850 to 1857

Canada (Upper) Penny and Half Penny Tokens 1850 to 1857

Political unrest tore through fledgling Canada and in 1849 rioting mobs caused the capital to move from Montreal to Toronto. The Bank of Upper Canada received permission to mint copper coins, and half penny and penny tokens were the result.

Here is what a recent catalog quotes:

HALF PENNY
worn: $3
averge circulated: $8
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $120

PENNY
worn: $5
averge circulated: $15
well preserved: $50
fully uncirculated: $150

The coin in our picture is has average circulated wear with 'adequate' eye appeal and would probably sell retail for $8 to $12. Less blotchiness would improve the sale price.
