These old florins (there are two shillings in a florin) are made of silver and bear King George's likeness before 1953 and Queen Elizabeth's likeness after 1952. The kangaroo and emu pattern on the back is the same for all these coins minted between 1938 and 1954.
For worn and average circulated examples of these coins, the value comes mostly from the silver content. This is called Base Value or BV in the listings below. To compute BV, multiply the current price of silver (look on Kitco.com) by the number of troy ounces of silver in the coin.
FLORIN 1938 TO 1945 (0.33 troy ounces silver)
worn: BV
average circulated: BV
well preserved: BV + $5 US dollars
fully uncirculated: BV + $20
FLORIN 1946 TO 1954 (0.18 troy ounces silver)
worn: BV
average circulated: BV
well preserved: BV + $2 US dollars
fully uncirculated: BV + $12
The values above apply to most dates, but there are a few dates that are better. The list below gives catalog values for well preserved coins.
1939: $200
1945: $20
Apply the concepts on our Important Terminology page to convert all values above to actual buy and sell values.
