Canada Token (Montreal) 1837 to 1852

Canada Token (Montreal) 1837 to 1852

The Canadian Confederation formed in 1867. Before that, token coinage was issued by variout banks to support commerce. There are many patterns, this one showing a bank building and an oval insignia. Denominations are sou (one half penny) and 2 sous (penny).

Collectors seek nice-looking specimens of these neat old coins. Typical catalog values for all dates (except below) run like this:

worn: $3 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated (like our picture): $15
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $175

These are catalog values and must be converted to actual buy and sell values using the concepts outlined on our Important Terminology page.

Just about every one of these tokens carries values as shown above. The catalogs report, however, two rare tokens:

SOU BANK OF MONTREAL DATED 1838 OR 1839
worn: $350
well preserved: $2000
