Belgium 20 Centimes, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 2 1/2, and 5 Francs 1832 to 1865

King Leopold I ruled Belgium from 1831 to 1865. Leopold II followed from 1865 to 1909. There are a lot of Belgian coins with the name 'Leopold' on them. This page addresses silver coins with the inscription LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES on the front, and a crowned shield with wreath on the back. Some of these coins are very valuable.

Our listings below give very approximate catalog values for these coins. Catalog values, as always, are inflated over what you can actually buy and sell the coin for. Use our Important Terminology page for some rules of thumb that convert catalog price to actual buy and sell price.

If you have one of these coins and it is in good shape with nice eye appeal, seek out a knowledgeable coin dealer or coin collector to assist you. There are many aspects to accurately evaluating a coin's value, and we only provide very general guidance here.

The silver content in these coins gives them inherent value regardless of condition. Use a web site such as kitco.com to look up the current value of silver per troy ounce. This can be significant, especially with the larger coins.
